Elijah the Prophet and You the Dad, by Daniel Montgomery

We’ve reached one of the most interesting characters in the Old Testament, in my opinion. He’s so fascinating I named my first son after him. Elijah the prophet. This guy was tough. This coming Sunday we’re going to be looking at a moment of revival in Israel’s history which Elijah led when he humiliated the prophets of Baal. It’s in I Kings 18, so grab your reading guide and read up. Immerse your mind in this story.
We will also celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday (with the photo booth and all) so be sure to bring your kids if you’re a dad, and bring your dad if you’re a kid (even a 30 year old kid).
Also, if you haven’t checked it out yet and you’re a dad, Sojourn has a great book out called Pastor Daddy. It’s all about how fathers lead the home spiritually. It’s a great tool for teaching your kids, but it’s also a great challenge for us dads to be a real pastor at home as well as a real daddy.
It’s my encouragement to you dads to be Elijahs in your home – by God’s grace (and that’s really the most important part), embrace the same spirit Elijah embraced when he confronted the God-substitutes of his day. Be on your knees constantly, lifting your family up to the Lord. Because of the renewal he has worked and is working in your own heart, foster renewal with your kids. Because he stood in the gap for your sin, stand up for the Lord with your family. And come get your picture taken on Sunday.
