The Curious Case Of Lachlan Coffey: The Forgotten Sojourn Album (free Sojourn mp3s included)

So I don’t know about you, but I am pumped to listen to the new Sojourn album titled Over the Grave.  On a quick side note, every time I hear the album title, I always think to myself in a valley girl accent, “I am sooooo over the grave.”  I am not certain that’s what Mike Cosper and his henchmen were going for, but that’s the way my mind works…in valley girl accents.

Well, anyways, I have been with Sojourn since its inception so I have seen our evolution of music productions, all six of them.  That’s right…six of them.  Most Sojourners are only aware of five Sojourn CDs, but there’s a sixth.  Our very first record was a live album named The Reverence and the Noise. It was a very limited release…very…like to 6 people.  The project was completely grassroots and we did everything ourselves…even produced copies ourselves to distribute amidst the congregation of maybe 100 people.  We actually distributed it on Sojourn’s very first anniversary party and I don’t even think there was any album art.
Click here for “Light Of The World” from this CD. You can also download it from the free iTunes podcast “Sojournmusic.com Radio”

So this is how it went down.  One Sunday night after our normal Sojourn service (back then we only had one service and it was at 6pm), most everyone stayed after and we recorded this crazy two to three hour worship service at Highland Baptist Church.  Sojourn has always worked with a plethora of artists so in between songs, there was constant movement of guitarists switching out, vocalists moving to and fro, djembe players weaving on and off stage.  It was crazy, but the end product is something that I still listen to today.

Some of the highlights of The Reverence and the Noise were “The Wonderful Cross”, “Light of the World”, “Come thou Fount’s” instrumental (you have to hear this), and “The Heart of Worship”.  The production is raw.  The mix isn’t the best.  But it’s got Sojourn written all over it and I loved this album.

The funniest part of that music event is that we intended to have a hidden track on the album.  So for the last song of the evening, we recorded “Father Abraham” and you could have sworn that Barnum and Bailey were involved because the room turned into an absolute circus.  People were going crazy.  Dancing everywhere.  Many were literally screaming the lyrics.  Ultimately, we had to stop recording it because it was just too loud and crazy so it never got on the album.  But once again, it proves and we’ve always known this, but this solidifies it.  Father Abraham = a good time.

The lead singer on Father Abraham? Daniel Montgomery. He started really normal and then just as the song went on started screaming it. It was awesome but probably would have scared young children. Great memory, thanks Lachlan.

  2. Anne Deeb says:

oh, i remember this album and night of recording very well… for 2 HUGE reasons…

1.i was baptized during the service before!
    and
    2. this was the night coury and i began “talking” or whatever you want to call it, we connected that night and were engaged just 2 months later!!! and we will celebrate 7 years of marriage this fall!

i still listen to this recording and love it, it has such passion!

  3. Mark Main says:

Thanks, Lachlan… I’m just getting turned onto the whole Sojourn thing… The music is awesome!!

    Mark

  4. Stupid Lachlan convinced me to play sleigh bells during My Glorious as the lyrics sang “Let the church bells ring”. My reputation has never recovered. Why Lachlan? Why do you hate me so much?

  5. Lachlan Coffey says:

I still like that version of “My Glorious”.

  6. Lachlan, is there an mp3 version of Light of the World?

  7. admin says:

The file wouldn’t upload directly into Wordpress, so we uploaded to Audio Acrobat for streaming instead, and put the mp3 for downloading on the podcast. Just search “Sojournmusic.com Radio” on iTunes, and you can then download the “Light of the World” episode. The song is the only thing on the episode.

  8. Erin F. says:

I remember that so well…even jay’s premature celebration of Christmas. I don’t know if i screamed “Father Abraham” ’cause at that point i probly thought i was too cool in my all-black. lame.

  9. Miguel says:

Ah, good times. I remember Cosper handing me a pack of 100 cds and saying he needed them by Sunday. I missed over three days of Classes at U of L to burn those one at a time. That was a fun event for sure.
