In the video below, Director of Operations Bryce Butler gives you the down-low on Sojourn’s vision for gospel renewal in Louisville, what’s been going on with the Vision Campaign, how it relates to our new campus in St. Matthews and what we need to move forward. Check it out and you’ll be up to speed in just three minutes:
Now, you should know that the video you just watched was “Take128.” Below is “Take 127.” It’s only 11 seconds long. Imagine what the first 126 were like:
I think Sojourn has many positive things going for it – I have up until recently attended there for around four years.
I do think that the placement of the church with a mission to reach out to the community had positive intent, however, the services and education opportunities are clearly skewed to a more highly educated, more critically thinking, more diverse community than the one in which the church is located (stereotypically speaking – there are exceptions in all communities).
The humbling in St. Matthews may be a result of now placing the church in an area of the city that typically has a more higly educated, higher socio-economic standing, and much more critically thinking demographic (again stereotypically speaking). Perhaps the negative press and experience of those with the Southern Baptist Seminary has also had an impact. Many people are highly suspect of very conservative churches – especially ones that present themselves as very “offbeat and avante gard” – and I think even more so in areas such as this.
I recently moved to St. Matthews and will be interested in developments. I wish the church all the best and am saddened that at its core I am not welcomed.
Peace,
Brent
