God Incomprehensible, by Rusty McKie

This Sunday we heard that when we seek God we will find Him. What a profound statement from God’s Word that we often don’t believe. This truly is amazing!
When confronted with this truth, the word “grace” should immediately come to mind. How else could we, finite humans, find the God of the universe?
Article 1 of the London Confession says:
“That God as he is in himself, cannot be comprehended of any but himself, dwelling in that inaccessible light, that no eye can attain unto, whom never man saw, now can see.”
This confession brings us to two conclusions:
First, the only way we can know God is by His revelation. If God is incomprehensible, then He must reveal Himself to us. This is grace; He is not obligated to pass along such an awesome gift.
This also means, as A.W. Tozer has said, that “Left to ourselves we tend immediately to reduce God to manageable terms”. Is your vision of God too small and manageable? He has revealed Himself so that we will not be left with our small views but be confronted with a massive view of who He is. He has also promised that if we seek Him, He will reveal Himself (Jer 29:13; Mt 7:7-11).
Second, because God is incomprehensible, He is worthy of our pursuit. We will learn about Him for all eternity. If our minds cannot fully comprehend the heights and the depths of the character and person of God, then we will forever be led in worship as God reveals more of His infinite nature to us. We will forever be reminded of how great God is and that there is still more of Him to be known.
Do not think, Christian, that God is some small, boring creature! No! He is the God who created everything that is seen and unseen, and we have only scratched the surface of who He is. It will take all eternity to begin to know the fullness of God. Will we begin now seeking Him with all our hearts?
Begin to seek Him today by thanking God for revealing Himself through the person of Jesus Christ! He is the only reason we can find God!
