Relief for Haiti (UPDATE)

One of the ways Sojourn is serving Haiti is by working with the Kentucky Baptist Convention Disaster Relief to provide aid to the devastated nation. We communicated in the last blog post to sign-up if you were interested/willing/able to go (even as early as January 25th). Aid is still difficult to get into Haiti and at this point, relief efforts are something that will be ongoing for the foreseeable future.  We are still not certain exactly when/how people might be able to go in support of the relief efforts but even if you are interested in participating you must have phase I of disaster relief training completed. As early as next week, the KBC is looking to send 2 different types of teams – medical and non-medical teams. Every person, though, still must receive the disaster relief training.

The KBC is hosting two phase I training sessions at the following locations. The training will cost $40 (cash or check) and includes a required background check, training materials and an ID card. SOJOURN WILL PAY THE $40 FEE FOR THE FIRST 20 PEOPLE THAT SIGN-UP FOR THE JAN. 23rd TRAINING SESSION.

Jan. 23 from 9am – 1 pm (CST) at 2nd Baptist Church, 633 Bishop Ave, Madisonville, KY.
Feb. 6 from 9 am – 1 pm at 9th & O Baptist Church, 4401 Breckenridge Ln, Louisville.

We are looking to provide (in conjunction with SBTS) transportation that would depart from Southern Seminary’s Legacy Hotel lobby at 7 am and is expected to return around 4 pm for the training in Madisonville this Saturday. Due to limited space, please secure your space as soon as possible. If you intend on participating in one of these training sessions, please fill out the form here expressing which date and whether or not you would like transportation to the January 23rd training. For transportation to this Saturday’s training, we need you to sign-up by 10a Friday morning (January 22d).

The sign-up for this Saturday’s training is closed, if you wish to sign-up for the February 6th training, please fill out this form.

More information about possible relief efforts to Haiti should be available at the time of training or visit the KBC Disaster Relief website here.

Please be patient with us as much of the information and need is still not fully known.  Please do not contact the office with questions.  Information will be posted here on the blog as we receive it. If you hear of anything that might be pertinent, please email mclark@sojournchurch.com.

I’m a U of L student, currently looking for ways to go serve during spring break. I see that there will/could be a trip as early as January 25, but what about as late as March 12? I imagine there will still be plenty of work to be done, and I truly want to be a part of it.

Not sure on any trip dates at this point. I would strongly encourage the training given that for any disaster relief it is needed and you would be equipped to respond immediately. To give you an idea, disaster teams are still in Louisiana helping with clean-up from Hurricane Katrina…this is not something we can fix in even a couple of months.

    Great question!

Just to also clear up confusion, Sojourn is not taking independent trips in support of relief efforts. Anything we might do would be through (at this point) the Kentucky Baptist Convention who is equipped and resourced to handle such efforts. We have also financially supported other agencies (including G.O. Ministries)
